How to play craps online

The goal of the game

Basically, the game consists of the player betting on the sum of the eyes of two dice. A shooter – the gambler who rolls the dice is called – rolls 2 dice. In some cases, one throw is sufficient; otherwise, there can be multiple throws. You win if you are right with your bet on the dice roll. If not, then the casino wins.

The basic Rules

It is played with normal dice, each showing a number of points from 1 to 6. Before getting started, all players place their bets on the appropriate bet they want to make. The craps playing field is usually made of a green-printed cloth, similar to the table in roulette. Here, you can place the chips on the corresponding fields.

The eyes that can be rolled have specific names:

  • Natural: Total 7 or 11 in any combination
  • Crap: A total of 2, 3 or 12 in any combination
  • All other totals (i.e. 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) are a so-called point (tie)

Guide: Craps Betting and Regular Play

The game consists of the shooter and the faders (all other players). It is also important that the shooter can always bet an amount first – this is called the banco. The other players can then follow suit. Once everyone has placed their bets, the shooter makes their first roll of two dice (comeout roll). The shooter can choose two dice from a total of five dice. The remaining 3 dice go back into a bowl. So how to win?

  • On a 7 or 11 (natural), the shooter wins instantly.
  • On 2, 3 and 12 (crap), the shooter loses.
  • If the total is different (point), the shooter rolls the dice again

If a second throw occurs, then:

  • If the shooter rolls the same "points" total as before, he wins.
  • On a 7 he loses immediately.
  • For any other total, the shooter rolls a third, fourth, and so on.

By the way, the shooter can keep rolling the dice if he wants to. Even if he has already thrown a "crap," he can continue playing. However, he must place a new banco for this. Otherwise, the shooter can pass the dice to his right-hand neighbor.

Types of Craps

One of the benefits craps offer is their variety of game types. In addition to the classic variant, you can try many other exciting variants. Here are the most famous types of craps.

Crapless Craps

There is actually a version where you play without craps. With the corresponding numbers 2, 3 and 12, the roll is counted as a draw instead, with 11 as well. So you can't lose in the comeout roll, and you can win immediately with a 7.

High Point Craps

The High Point variant is about the number of points rolled. The rules are a bit different here. On a 2 or 3, the shooter must re-roll. On the other hand, the highest values (11 and 12) mean an instant victory. Anything in between requires a second roll, with the sum of the first roll becoming the target number. To win, the shooter must roll a higher number than the first time.

The Rich Craps

In this variant, you do not take two dice in your hand but only one. With a 6, the shooter wins directly; with a 1 - he loses. A new roll is due if a 2 to 5 comes up. The number from the first roll then becomes the target number in Die Rich Craps. If the following throw is higher, the shooter wins; otherwise, he loses.

Simplified Craps

Although it looks a lot more complicated as a game than it is, some players want to play a simpler version. There is no point in Simplified Craps, so the game will definitely be decided with just one roll. If the number is 3, 4, 11 and 12, the shooter wins; with all other numbers, he loses.

Card Craps

Incidentally, there is also a craps variant with playing cards instead of dice. Dice games were frowned upon for a long time and were not considered elegant enough to be offered in casinos. Card Craps is played with Aces, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s from two decks of cards. In total, you play here with 48 cards. The shooter does not roll the dice but reveals two cards at a time. Otherwise, the rules are the same as for the dice variant.

Craps Bets

Depending on the variant and the game table, there are certain additional and side bets that can be played. Most of these bets can also be played online in craps.

Pass Bet

The pass bet is a bet that the shooter, i.e., the thrower, will win. This form corresponds to the original craps. In order for the shooter to win, he must roll a "natural" in his first roll, i.e., a 7 or 11. Or he makes a "point" and hits the same number again in the following roll.

Don't Pass Bet

Is this the opposite of the pass bet? More or less. The don't pass bet loses if the pass bet wins. Don't Pass wins if the shooter on the comeout roll (on the first roll) rolls a 2 or 3 - a crap. It also wins if the shooter on the comeout roll makes a point but fails to reroll the total before a 7 is rolled. If the shooter rolls a Crap 12 on the first roll, it's a tie. So the bet is neither won nor lost.

Come Bet

The come bet is essentially the same as the pass bet, with the only difference being that it is placed later. It can be set after the first roll if a point/tie was rolled there.

Don't Come Bet

The don't come bet is also a bet in craps if the first roll was a point. The Don't Come bet is the equivalent of the Don't Pass bet and the opposite of the Come bet. It wins if the shooter rolls a 2 or 3.

Hardways bets

Hardways bets are bets on a very specific combination of dice – always 2 identical dice. For example, you can bet on a four of a kind. If you win the bet, you get paid nine times the stake. Alternatively, these double bets are also referred to as hard bets. You only win with a four of a kind, and you can always roll the dice again. On the other hand, you lose if you roll either a 7 or an 8 for the total number of points, but you don't have a four of a kind (e.g. a 5 plus 3).

Taking the Odds

There are different taking the odds bets that you can play in craps: 4 and 10, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8. The latter is also called the Big 6 and 8. You are betting that the selected number of eyes will be rolled before the 7. These bets are also called take the odds bets because there is no house edge. The take bets or place bets are an integral part of the craps table and can be played both in the casino and in the online casino.

Laying the Odds

In the Laying the Odds bet, you play the exact opposite: you are betting that a 7 will be rolled before the other numbers mentioned. Again, this bet has no house edge unless you are playing with a 5% commission.

Place bets

In the case of place bets, analogous to the place the odds bet, you play on a certain eye value that should come before the 7. The numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 can be played. They have different payout values. The place bets are an integral part of the craps table and can be played both in the casino and in the online casino.

One roll bets

With one roll bets, you can bet on the number of eyes that will appear in the next roll. The bet is definitely decided with a throw. The probabilities and winnings differ depending on which bet you choose. Some of the bets you can play with these Craps One Roll Bets are:

  • Any Crap: Players bet that the next round will see a total of 2, 3 or 12.
  • Hi-Lo: A bet that either a 2 or a 12 will come up in the next roll.
  • Crap 12: Players bet that the next roll will be a 12.
  • Eleven: The player bets that the next roll will total 11.
  • Seven/ Any 7: The player bets that the next roll will total 7.
  • Crap 3: Players bet that the next roll will be a 3.
  • Crap 2: A Bet that the total of 2 will come up next.
  • Field Bet: A bet that a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 will come up.

Tips, tricks and strategy

What you can do, however, is to think about what you want to play beforehand. One-roll bets with higher winnings promise more action and adrenaline, while pass/come bets have better payout percentages. You should also set a budget for playing beforehand and stick to it. The bet per round can then be adjusted accordingly. It should not be set too high.

In summary, we can state that it is quite exciting to be able to play craps in online casinos. It is a game for professionals and, at the same time, a game for newbies. In New Zealand, almost everyone knows how craps are played. When you first get started with the game, the plethora of possible bets can seem a bit complicated. In order to know all variants and bets, including odds and payouts, you need to have some experience. However, if you start out with simple bets like pass/don't pass, then it's an easy game to play, even for a beginner.
